The progenitor of the Davidson family in the United States, or at least our branch of the family, is Robert Davidson, born about 1800 in Mochrum, Wigtownshire, Scotland. Robert married on 19 Nov 1829, in Kirkcowan, Wigtownshire, Scotland, Jannet McCubbin, daughter of Robert McCubbin and Martha Pettigrew. From this marriage were born ten children: Robert, Jessie, Martha, John, Janet, James, Alexander, Mary, Peter, and Agnes. Our Davidson family descends from James, the sixth child, born in 1839 in Kirkcowan. Most of the family emigrated from Scotland at various times during the 1860s and 1870s and settled in Ryegate, Caledonia, Vermont. In 1895 James Davidson’s son, John B. Davidson, married Ida Belle Wilson, daughter of William B. Wilson of Renfrewshire, Scotland.
